A prewar design that was outclassed by all its rivals, The P40s managed to keep their dignity intact by sheer ruggedness and their aviators' excellent skills.

The Flying Tigers, under the expert direction of General Chennault, from December of 1941 until July 4, 1942 engaged in aerial combat - shooting down 286 Japanese aircraft while losing only eight P40s!
